The Silesian Museum in Katowice began to exist by virtue of a resolution of the Silesian Sejm from January 23, 1929. During the war, it suspended its operations, but it was restored in December 1984. Located in the center of Katowice at al. W. Korfantego 3 building of a former hotel from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In 2006, it was entered into the State Register of Museums. To date, the museum has collected over 120 thousand. exhibits from various fields of art. The most valuable collections are the collections of: - Polish painting (they include works by, among others, Józef Chełmoński, Artur Grottger, Tadeusz Makowski, Jacek Malczewski, Jan Matejko, Józef Mehoffer and Stanisław Wyspiański), - unprofessional art, - artistic and documentary photography, - Polish poster , - ethnographic collections, - collections in the field of Polish stage art. The institution is divided into the following parts: - Art Department - Non-Professional Art Department - Mechanical Documentation Department - Ethnography Department - History Department - Archeology Department - Education Department - Publishing Department - Polish Scenography Center, Silesian Museum Branch - Online Gallery - 3D exhibits - Gallery Of Polish Painting - Scientific Library of the Silesian Museum The museum also conducts numerous research: archeological, historical, ethnographic, from the non-professional art department and region documentation.
