The sports and entertainment hall managed by Przedsiębiorstwo Widowiskowo-Sportowe "Spodek". The history of its creation dates back to 1959, when a competition was announced for the design of the hall directed by the Association of Polish Architects. The design of Maciej Krasiński and Maciej Gintowt, designers of the Office of Studies and Typical Designs of Industrial Construction from Warsaw, won. The construction of 'Spodek' began to be built in 1964 under the direction of Andrzej Żórawski. The location of the new facility was chosen around the very center of Katowice. Construction of the hall was officially completed in 1971. PLN 200 million was allocated for this investment, but the final cost was much more than expected, about PLN 800 million. The hall has a modern auditorium with retractable seats and elegant VIP lounges. It also has advanced technological lighting enabling recording in HD technology and a huge LED screen in the shape of a cylinder. From the outside, the hall resembles a flying saucer, hence the name of the object. It perfectly fulfills two of its basic functions: a sports hall and an entertainment hall. There is an ice rink, a hotel and a gym right next to the building. '' Spodek '' is used to organize volleyball, basketball, ice hockey and music concerts, special events, conferences, scientific lectures, circus performances, and market events. The volume of the entire facility is 338 732 m³, while its usable area is 29 473 m².
