Address: ul. Tadeusza Kościuszki , 42-470 Siewierz
The first defensive stronghold in medieval Siewierz already existed in the 12th century and was located southeast of today's city. Presumably it was already the seat of the castellans. Around this time, the first stone fragments of the castle were built, which gradually replaced its earlier wooden buildings. From then on, the castle served as the summer residence of the Krakow bishops. The original castle building was built on an artificially built platform, surrounded by an earth embankment. Erected on an irregular plan with single-bay, wooden residential buildings. The first stone elements of the castle probably come from the period 1420-1450. A round tower with a diameter of about 9 meters was erected in the southern part of the castle courtyard. The entrance to the courtyard was reinforced by a gatehouse. In subsequent years, further defensive transformations of the castle were carried out. Among other things, a new gate was added from the north and insured with a stone and brick tower at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. Currently, the Siewierz Castle is a so-called permanent ruin with a full perimeter of the walls, a gate tower and a reconstructed barbican. To this day, few original decorative elements of the building have survived, such as columns or decorative window frames. The ruin is located in the eastern part of the city of Siewierz and together with the green areas adjacent to it is an area of recreation and tourism.
