It is the oldest and most valuable monument in the Cieszyn region. It was not built as an ordinary defensive building, but as a place of religious worship which, in times of danger, allowed refuge inside. It was great for this purpose, first of all because of the thickness of the walls and the narrow window clearance allowing effective protection. In the second half of the 13th century, the defensive function was also taken over by the Final Defense Tower built on the castle hill and the Piast Tower built in the 14th century. For many centuries it was a castle chapel and a parish church; next to it was probably the oldest parish cemetery in Cieszyn.
