Address: ul. 1 Maja 1 , 43-300 Stare Miasto - Bielsko-Biała
The beginnings of the existing theater establishment in Bielsko Biała today are associated with the establishment of the Theater Construction Committee in 1887, which soon initiated - with extreme success - a voluntary fundraiser. The eclectic building, combining elements of different styles, began to perform its functions already in the fall of 1890. The first performance was Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream". The theater was considered one of the best provincial stages of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Originally, only a professional German-language scene operated here. After Poland regained independence, the activities of the Polish Theater Society were initiated. Preparing his own performances and inviting theaters from other cities to the staging, in 1934 he gained access to the stage of the Municipal Theater, having three days a week to perform Polish-language performances. However, plans to create a Polish theater were not realized in Bielsko-Biała before World War II. In the interwar period, the theater was also the only professional German stage in Poland, of a high standard. After World War II, the theater was reactivated in June 1945 by members of the pre-war Polish Theater Society. Soon, Cieszyn theater was joined to Bielski as a branch. National-level enterprises were, among others staging of "Dziadów" (in 1965, directed by Mieczysław Górkiewicz), or staged on the eve of martial law "Jeremiasz" by Karol Wojtyła. Currently, the repertoire includes the latest Polish and Central European dramaturgy, social and historical performances, as well as musical performances. In addition, the institution conducts popularizing activities, organizing lectures and other meetings for residents.
