Formerly called the Provincial Park of Culture and Recreation General Jerzy Ziętek. It covers an area of 620 ha. One of the largest city parks in Europe. The park construction project was created in 1950 at a meeting of the Provincial National Council in Katowice. Construction works began in July 1951. The assumption was to divide the area into two zones. The central part of the park with a forest character, with a network of pedestrian paths conducive to passive recreation. The remaining 13 ha with cultural and recreational specificity as a favorable area for active recreation and organization of cultural urban events. Various investments were gradually implemented in the park. These include, among others: Silesian Stadium (National Stadium), GKS Katowice Stadium, Silesian Planetarium, Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park, Silesian Zoological Garden, Silesian Amusement Park, House of Creative Work "Leśniczówka", Narrow-gauge railway, Rosarium, Perennial Garden, Exhibition Hall '' Hat '', Marina, Wave Bath, Outdoor gym, Bulldrome, tennis center. The park is called the 'green lungs' of Upper Silesia, due to its natural values and the 'cultural center' of the city of Chorzów.
