The Silesian Planetarium is the largest and oldest planetarium and astronomical observatory in Poland. It was founded on December 4, 1955 in the then Provincial Park of Culture and Recreation (now also called Park Śląski) located in Chorzów. The "heart" of the Silesian Planetarium is a powerful projector, also called the "planetarium". The projector was manufactured by the Zeiss plant in Jena. It weighs over 2 tons, while the height with vertical arrangement is 5 m. The building complex of the Silesian Planetarium also has an astronomical observatory (with the largest refractor 30 cm in Poland), a several-meter long sundial, climatological station and seismological station.
