Address: Brama Wybrańców 1 , 43-200 Pszczyna

The Castle Museum is housed in a once defensive castle, later transformed into a representative, three-winged residence. The first castle in Pszczyna - according to Henryk Schaeffer, a nineteenth-century prince archivist and chronicler of Pszczyna - was most likely erected in the 11th or 12th century by the Piast princes. It was a single-wing structure, surrounded by earth fortifications and a moat filled with water. It served as a hunting lodge, also for the next centuries, up to the 20th century, as the rich forests of animals nearby were famous for their hunts. It was not until the 15th century that a stone castle was built in Pszczyna. The initiator of this undertaking was Helena Korybutówna, niece of Władysław Jagiełło. This medieval castle - over the centuries - was extended and rebuilt several times. The last reconstruction - in the Neo-Baroque style - was carried out in 1871-1876 by the eminent French architect Hipolit Alexander Destailleur. Unlike the previous ones, which were prolonged due to lack of funds, it was carried out with great momentum and without causing debt. The building has survived in this shape to this day. The Pszczyna castle was ruled by Piast princes from the Opole-Racibórz line, Czech Przemyślida from Opava, the Hungarian Turzon family from Spisz, the Silesian family of Promnitz from Żary, Anhalt from Köthen and Hochberg from Książ.
